International Business Etiquette

Do you know the definition of Business Etiquette? Business etiquette is about building relationships with other people. Etiquette is not about rules & regulations but is about providing basic social comfort and creating an environment where others feel comfortable and secure, this is possible through better communication.

Social media communication platforms (i.e. Facebook, Linkedin) are evolving rapidly day by day, as the concept of social media etiquette becomes a crucial part of business. Business etiquette consists of two things. Firstly, thoughtful consideration of the interests and feelings of others and secondly, being able to minimise misunderstandings.  These are influenced by individual behaviour & demeanour. Business etiquette instructs this behaviour.

Business etiquette differs from region to region and from country to country. This creates a complex situation for people as it is hard to balance the focus on both international business etiquette and other business activities at the same time. Therefore, a wise step is to focus on some key pillars of business etiquette.

Here are some key business etiquette tips that mean real success to business:

‘ Thank You ’ Note

If you want to differentiate yourself from others then never forget to write a‘Thank You’ note to your job interviewer or your client. This will leave a good impression and also reflect well on your company.

Know the Names

Give others respect by knowing their names which will increase goodwill and communication. it is also worth management stepping back and acknowledging people individually for their good work as this will enhance their self esteem and increase motivation.

Observe the ‘Elevator Rule’

Be mindful of saying appropriate things at a job interview or client meeting. Don’t start discussing business with a client or interviewer as soon as you step out of the lift. By doing so, you avoid the risk of damaging your reputation.

Focus on the Face,  Not the Screen

Never forget to switch off your phone and try not to use any other device just to prove you are a multitasking individual. In fact, in the world of business this is considered bad manners. Concentrate on the meeting and listen to what people are saying.

Don’t Judge

Everyone is unique in their own way and uses a different approach to deal with situations. Therefore, if you disagree with another person’s approach instead of criticising try to understand it from their point of view. By doing so, you create a friendly environment. Always remember you get respect by giving respect.

Whether in business or between individuals, one concern is brand awareness. Individuals want to be noticed both socially and professionally. People want to be remembered by others.

However, in the digital landscape you have to be very careful when trying to pursue your brand awareness. Think carefully before doing. What we mean by this is that before creating a hashtag, posting on a Facebook wall or texting – think how the other person will feel when they receive your message.

Character, Behaviour, Honesty

Your character reflects your individuality and your behaviour exhibits your personality. Business etiquette encourages revealing your positive qualities. This helps your reputation.

Always be honest and remember that it takes a long time to develop trust and a good reputation and only one small mistake to lose it. Business etiquette provides a framework for stating the boundaries of terms & conditions, contracts and promises.

Sensitivity & Diplomacy

A key pillar of business etiquette is sensitivity, meaning giving careful thought to every business aspect before making a judgement. This gives a strong foundation to your business. Also, thoughtless words and actions lead to a negative outcome. Being aware of business etiquette encourages careful thought.

Elements of business etiquette

Business etiquette instructs on you how to present yourself professionally in different cultures. The keys for making a good impression are dressing appropriately, your body language, presenting your business cards, gift giving, conducting meetings and many other important elements.

How to Choose Right Career?

Most often we end up choosing the career which perhaps not the right one. We simply go for something because we have been told to do so, or may be under influence of the visible glory of the particular job.

Softskills at times can come to your help. If we know the decision making skill.

Career selection has always been a stressful event. If we look back in our own life, many of us would feel the career that they have opted for currently could have been different if someone would have guided properly, or at least some help should have been there.

This is even becoming more critical as the competition is increasing, more and more parents are pushing their kids to select the best career and they even end up spending huge money to secure that ‘best’ career. While many can sail through such turmoil, many others find it so difficult to adjust with unpleasant career. Even if they accept the career, they may not excel in that. The cycle of non-performance will hit them soon.

Let us understand how the whole non-performance cycle works out. There are two friends Rahul and Rohan. They both have studied together in a same school and their track of securing good marks have pushed them to choose a career which is like extremely competitive. Rahul fairs well as he was clear about the choices he made, however, Rohan faced lots of struggle and fall out was he dropped the study mid way and chosen to study something else.He than opted for a course which would get him then high paying jobs. Soon he realise that the job market has changed! By the time he completed his studies, the scenario was different, he somehow got a job and now he is a mediocre employee and always on a look for ‘better’ options.

Selecting something based on fancy or glory or even out of force will never help you to grow in career. It will create more job related burn-outs. Rohan’s struggle is evident and many like him are facing such issues.

Career decision is the most critical decision for students and professionals, and if chosen a wrong career, one has to end up paying higher price in the later life.

Personal Development Skill

Personal development skills are those essential skills that you need to develop for you to set personal goals and to achieve personal empowerment. You can build a strong and effective skill-set through personal development, and this will help you to make positive choices and right decisions in the future.

Personal development is life long process. People need to assess their skills and qualities, considering their aims in life and set goals in order to realise and maximise their potential. It helps you to identify the skills you need to set life goals which can enhance your employability prospects, raise your confidence and lead to a more fulfilling, higher quality life.  Plan to make relevant, positive and effective life choices and decisions for your future to enable personal empowerment. Although early life development and early formative experiences within the family, at school, etc. can help to shape us as adults, personal development should not stop later in life.

Steps for Personal Development:

  • Organising your time.
  • Change in specific behaviour
  • Learn new skills time to time

Organising Your Time:

If you are considering making changes in your life, finding additional time often poses a problem.  It could be that the changes you are thinking of making are to ensure you have extra time to:

  • Spend with your family.
  • Spend on things you enjoy doing.
  • Devote to your work.
  • Devote to your education.
  • Learning to say ‘no’ to jobs or requests that you feel are not your responsibility.
  • Learning to delegate – sharing jobs/tasks can be fun and will leave you with more time.
  • Making a ’to do’ list of tasks you need to do each day/week, ticking off tasks that you complete.
  • Giving up things you do not really want or need to do.
  • Identifying your high and low times of the day.  Everyone has a time when he/she feels more or less energetic.  Try to do the most demanding tasks when you have the greatest energy as you will do them more quickly, thereby releasing more time to spend on other things.

Change in specific behaviour:

We all are programmed to do certain things in a certain way. broadly this is know as a behaviour. Our behaviour changes as per the situations. However, there are come behaviours which are constant and almost become shadow of our personality.

You might consider these things while changing that particular behaviour which is holding you back from growth.

  • Identify the negative behaviour
  • Identify the triggers to that negative behaviour
  • Make a note of negative outcomes of such behaviour and relate it with positive behaviour
  • Think positive and Stay balanced in every approach
  • Remember no-one likes the negative behaviour

Learning a New Skill:

Learning a new skill will broaden the opportunities for you, at the same time it will empower you as an individual. There are many things that prevent people from learning new skills,  These might include:

• Lack of Confidence or Self-Esteem:  This is one of the greatest obstacles facing many individuals.  However, if this is a problem then ask yourself if there is anyone who would support and help you to take the first steps towards learning a new skill.  Often, once the first move is made then the greatest hurdle is overcome.  Confidence increases as you develop new skills.

• Financial Crunch:  You may see your financial situation as a barrier to developing new skills, this need not be the case.  The internet has lots of pages and tools that can help you develop specify skills.  There may be courses offered in local schools, colleges or universities which are free or offered at a reduced rate for people on a lower incomes.  Distance-learning courses allow you to study at home which can help to reduce the cost of learning.  There may exist trust funds or charities that offer grants for people developing new skills in your area.  It is also possible to learn a new skill with the aid of books from a library.  Also, voluntary work can provide an excellent opportunity for learning and developing new skills as can being a member of a local group or society.

• Family Commitments:  If you have family commitments that prevent you from having the time to learn a new skill, perhaps it is possible for you to enlist the help of a friend or family member to give you a few free hours weekly.  Colleges and universities offering vocational training courses may have free or subsidised crèche places.

Recording your Personal Development

It is often a good idea to keep a record of your personal development. By writing down key developments in your learning and development as and when they occur, you will be able to reflect on your successes at a later date. This reflection may well help to motivate you to learn more skills in the future.  Try keeping a learning log or journal as you develop your skills and knowledge.
